Life Update – The Little Things

I read a blog post this week that was short, sweet and simple: a life update. A post about what’s going on, what you’re thinking about, what you’re liking and so on.

I love that idea. I don’t know about you but I find myself going back frequently to old blog posts from a year ago. It’s funny how much life can change in a year and I love the reminder of where I was then (whether it was good or bad).

My posts tend to look at the big things going on (new recipes tried (yes, that is a big thing), travel, visiting friends, family, new places, wandering) but not so much the little things. So, it’s early February 2017 and here are the little things in my life.

My daily mantra (no, I’m not just saying that. It really is the saying that gets me through most days) and tea. Lots and lots of tea. Black tea during the day and detox or, my new favorite, Moroccan mint at night.

School. A lot of reading. A lot of late nights. A lot of caffeine. Worth all of it.

Winter indulgent snack: popcorn. Skinny Pop to be exact. Tell me, what’s better than a bowl of popcorn as you curl up on the couch with the wind howling and the snow falling outside?

Currently reading Modern Romance (a post on this coming shortly), Fordlandia and Once in a Great City.

I recommend all of them. Fordlandia is about Henry Ford’s acquisition of land in the Amazon and what a huge failure the venture was.

Once in a Great City covers the very prime of Detroit right before it’s downfall. Motown, the Mustang, the Olympic Bid, organized crime, corruption, urban renewal. It’s an easy read and so fascinating!

Also reading Prince Valiant every week. The best comic around, hands down.

Loving late night puppy cuddles. I mean, come on. Look at that face. Who wouldn’t love that?

Elephants. Nothing new here but any excuse to talk about them, I’ll take!

Mahogany Coconut candle and shea butter hand cream. The stuff of every midwest winter dream.

What’s inspiring me:

Videos from this year’s and last year’s Makers Conference.

Incredible discussions on Our Shared Shelf. A great place to have respectful conversations about books, feminism and society.

The Crown. I know there’s controversy about the show but I love it and Claire Foy is fabulous!

Sheryl Sandberg recognizing the importance of work life balance and the importance of family. Just when you think she can’t get any cooler, she proves you wrong.

Mari Copeny because what’s more inspiring than a young girl standing up for her rights.

I’ve found that when life gets to be overwhelming, it’s important to focus on the good, little things. A warm mug of coffee in the morning, a long walk, an absorbing book. So, these are mine currently. The little things that make life good right now.

I’d love to hear what yours are! What keeps you going on a bad day?

Day In The Life

I’ve been reading blogs for a while now and I think there’s no better feeling than scrolling through the internet and finding a new favorite.

My most recent find is Shot From The Street – have you guys read it? I’m officially obsessed – Lizzy is utterly fabulous!

Well, while doing some thorough blog creeping I stumbled across a “Day In The Life” post (yeah, some serious creeping) and I loved the idea so I thought I’d whip one up!

So, here it goes:

8:00 am – I am NOT a morning person. In fact don’t talk to me, don’t even make eye contact with me until I’ve had a minimum of one cup of coffee.

In fact, the only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is the thought of coffee brewing in the kitchen.

9:00 – 10:00 am – Blogging and breakfast – conveniently stationed by the coffee pot.

11:00 am – Time to get ready and start feeling like a functioning person.

Hair and teeth brushed, dressed, face washed and I’m a new woman.

Then it’s time to play. Every morning Lupin and I do some sort of game to get some energy out. Tug of war, chasing, fake fighting. Basically it looks like Simba and Nala running around pouncing on everything.

Yes, I do sing “I just can’t wait to be kiiiiiiing . . . ” Lupin harmonizes.

Then it’s time to crash.

12:00 pm – Time for lunch.

I hate having big, filling lunches. It makes me feel lazy and lethargic the rest of the day so I like to stick with salad, veggies and hummus or sweet potatoes (with bbq sauce – don’t knock it until you’ve tried it)!

12:30 – 3:00 pm – a little more computer time . . .

and a whole lot of laundry.

If you have a dog tell me, does your dog do laundry with you because Lupin does with me and it take twice as long.

He thinks my laundry basket is his own personal toy box so if you’re not watching, next thing you’ll know half of your clothes will be missing and you’ll find him laying on them like a king.

Oh, and more snacking. Obviously.

4:00 pm – time to workout.

I like to alternate days between running and yoga or pilates. I tried yoga for the first time a few years ago and didn’t love it (my teacher was very flighty and annoying). I recently decided to give it a try again and LOVE it!

If you’ve never tried it, you must! It makes you feel so strong, empowered and calm all at the same time!

5:00 pm – I always give myself a treat after a good workout.

Nothing is more motivating than knowing you’ll get a good treat at the end.

My yoga studio is right by my favorite coffee shop and (if you’ve been reading for a while), you won’t be surprised to see what my treat normally is . . .

5:30 pm – Now that the days are warmer and longer, I’ve been loving being able to take Lupin for nice, long walks.

Clearly, he hates it.

6:30 pm – Dinner time!

I’m still working on perfecting that quinoa ‘fried rice’ recipe I mentioned last week.

I think I’m pretty close to getting it, would you want the recipe when it’s absolutely perfect?

 photo Lunch Cooking_zpss9yrmmob.jpg

7:00 – 9:00 pm – time to eat and spend some quality time with my book.

 photo Quinoa Fried Rice_zpsfqo7pwpg.jpg

10:00 – Midnight – No picture here but this is prime TV time. My newest very favorite show is The Carbonaro Effect but when that’s not on, I’ve been absolutely binging Impractical Jokers.

Carbonaro has me sitting on the edge of my seat, bowl of popcorn forgotten as I stare (open mouthed) completely entranced.

Impractical Jokers, on the other hand, will have me laughing hysterically while enjoy some good late night snacking.

I took my camera around on a day off of work and what I loved was even though it was just an average, nothing special day – finding ways to take pictures of the routine was so much fun!
