Wolf Wednesday: Casper Mattress

Everyone has that one thing they splurge on. Shoes, organic food, your car. For me, it’s Lupin. Bet you didn’t see that one coming.

When we were living in Chicago and every penny I made went towards bills, I would do everything in my power to treat him. I lived off a spreadsheet budget so that, during  each pay period, I would have a few dollars left over to buy a new box of treats or another new toy.

Even now, despite my stable income job, I’ve added grad school to my list of bills but still resiliently refuse to stop spoiling my wolf. I will happily forfeit a new pair of shoes (all the Carrie Bradshaws in the world are cringing, I know) if it means a new surprise for the pup.

A few weeks back I stumbled across Casper Mattresses (thanks to the Skimm) and noticed they made dog beds. I did my research and found that, apparently, so did they.

110 prototypes were developed, 460 hours of laboratory testing and 11 months of dog sleep studies. The result: a combination of pressure-relieving memory foam and durable support foam wrapped in thick canvas.

There’s extra material on the surface for when dogs dig before laying down (their natural instinct from the wild), the sides are bolstered to create a safe space as dogs feel safest in enclosed areas and, most importantly in Lupin’s case, the cover material is made with one of the strongest bonded microfibers which can be removed and washed.

I bought it the next day.

Frantically checking the tracking status, the big day finally came. I dragged the box into the house, automatically triggering “Curious George” (our nickname for Lupin when he gets unbelievably nosy).

The foam pieces come separate and you have to assemble it within the cover. I was a bit annoyed at first that assembly was required (I can’t even assemble a ratio-friendly PB & J) but it’s beyond simple and quick. Believe me, if I can do it, you can.

I gave the bed a test run and then with promises of a kiss, I passed it over to it’s new owner.

Casper even sent a little toy which Lupin has been playing with nonstop since. We’re working on his hand-eye (would it be mouth-eye?) coordination. It’s not going so well.

 photo DSC04294_zpsklvx5ks8.jpg

The bed’s a bit pricy but if it lasts the way it’s meant to, I think it’s well worth the investment. If not, as long as he’s happy now, I’m happy.

What’s the one thing you can’t help but splurge on?

Wolf Wednesday: Spring Morning Wander

It may be controversial to say this but I think I like spring more than summer. Maybe it’s a result of being an adult now and summer not meaning freedom. I have no idea why I was in such a hurry to grow up, kids have it made!

Anyway, in spring you have the promise of summer and the exciting anticipation that comes with it. The sun is almost always out, days are longer, mornings are crisp, you can curl up under the covers with the night breeze coming in from a cracked window.

My favorite part of the day is Lupin’s morning walk. Fueled up on almond butter toast and coffee, I snuggle into a sweatshirt and stroll around the neighborhood which is currently in full bloom.

We’ve had a tremendous amount of rain this year which has resulted in the biggest, brightest blooms I’ve ever seen and smells that turn my wolf into a bloodhound.

He’ loves our morning walks just as much as I do and sits next to me all during breakfast, just waiting until it’s time.

 photo DSC04202_zpsuf9flljm.jpg

Just look at this and tell me spring isn’t a magical time.

I really can’t think of a better way to start the day than with an outdoor wander in the early morning sunlight, fresh faced and cozy before meetings, phone calls and hoards of emails becomes reality.

Life Update

Where has the time gone! My last post was over a month ago, I can’t even believe it.

I can now attest that “March Madness” is not a term exclusive to basketball. Combine that with school and other home responsibilities and that’s what’s been going on. So, within the time since my last post . . .

Flannels have been traded in for chambray shirts.

The books I’ve been reading have been for school and have been awesome!

If you’re interested in history, you should absolute check out Penny Coleman’s book on Rosie the Riveter.

 photo IMG_2064_zpspqcva1zo.jpg

It’s officially blossom time! I ran through a tunnel of bloomed trees the other day and I could not have had a bigger smile on my face.

 photo IMG_2194_zpsontpisri.jpg

Our trees practically bloomed overnight thanks in large part to the massive amount of rain storms that have been rolling in.

 photo IMG_2228_zpsswhcwmnn.jpg

Fantastic for flowers, not so great when your Wolf needs a walk.

I really can’t complain though. Just look at them!

 photo IMG_2220_zpsxijkzpko.jpg

 photo IMG_2263_zpshudmny2g.jpg

It’s also time to start eating outside. For me, there’s no better way to pass a summer evening than with a glass of wine in the sun.

 photo IMG_2239_zpsawqw8j7p.jpg

The Wolf is pretty happy about it all too.

 photo IMG_2280_zpskovqexwj.jpg

He loves to wake up and say good morning to his friends through the window.

Baseball season is finally here. Baseball, Summer Shandy and pizza, it doesn’t get more summer than that!

 photo IMG_2178_zps333hglux.jpg

That’s about it! February to April is the most hectic and boring time of the year.

Not entirely winter, not yet spring. All anyone wants to do is curl up, wrapped in a blanket and hibernate until the blossoms appear.

May on the other hand is fantastic! It marks the start of early sunrises, late sunsets, summer breezes, long walks, cotton dresses, road trips, fresh fruit. It’s my favorite time of year and it’s right around the corner!

P.S. all photos are from my Instagram. If you haven’t checked it out, you should!

Autumn Hike – Stony Creek, MI

I love October. It’s my favorite month of the year.

It marks the start of fall, the best of the seasons, and the start of the holiday season.

I can’t believe today is the last day of the month – I feel like I’ve completely missed it what with all my traveling the past few weeks.

Friday marked the last day of my traveling and I never thought I’d be so happy to be home!

Now, I have until Thanksgiving to do all my favorite fall things and started right when I got home with good and proper fall tradition: a hike through bright, changing trees.

photo Stony Creek Park MI 27_zpsgathrzdq.jpg

Stony Creek is a park located about 45 minutes outside the city full of towering trees, streams and a large lake.

The perfect place to run, bike, kayak or spend some much needed quality time hiking with your wolf.

photo Stony Creek Park MI 20_zpsv1nbcbme.jpg

The East coast is known for their bright colored fall trees.

In the Midwest we have richer colors – golds, evergreens and burgundies.

You’ll wake up one morning and open the window to a crisp breeze and a spectrum of rich colors right in your front yard.

We hiked over crunching leaves, over bridges and along the lake for hours enjoying the warm day and crisp breeze.

Mile after mile of tree lined trails makes you feel like you’re in the UP but with a much more convenient drive.

You might pass a runner here and a biker there but the sounds of cars and civilization and canceled out and replaced with the crunch of drying leaves and birds singing.

The full trail is 6 miles around the lake. You may have to give each other pep talks to get through it.

Promises of warm apple cider and donuts may have been promised if we made it out.

There’s nothing quite like a trail hike in the fall. The perfect way to start my fall bucket list, if you ask me!

I have 3 1/2 weeks to fit in all things fall (you best believe on the day after Thanksgiving, I’m in full Christmas mode), have any suggestions?

October is my favorite month of the year.

The leaves changing, pumpkin everything, crisp mornings, the clothes!

You know what else is great about October? It’s Adopt-A-Dog Month.

Lupin Portrait

Having a rescue dog myself, adoption is a big part of my heart.

Walk in the Woods

Smiling Puppy

For years before bringing Lupin home, I told my family that no one will ever love you like a rescue dog and I couldn’t have been more right.

Adoption Day

Did you know each year on average 3-4 million animals sit in shelters waiting for someone to love them and give them a home?

Puppy's First Snow

Car Ride

American Humane established Adopt-A-Dog Month back in 1981 to encourage people to save the lives of pets and to better their own through adoption.

There’s plenty of ways to celebrate so be sure to check out American Humane’s website to learn more.

And most importantly be sure to support your local shelters by giving a pet a loving home.

They say rescuing a dog is saving them but I promise you, they’ll save you too.

If you want to learn more about Lupin and his story, you can read more here and here.

As always, if you ever want to chat about adoption and what Lupin and I went through, please feel free to reach out.

Lupin’s 2nd Birthday

I do have one last Philadelphia post for you (probably my favorite and will definitely make you hum Gonna Fly Now under your breath for the rest of the day) but when updating the layout for my blog (what do you think?) I realized I have barely any recent posts of the Wolf.

There’s absolutely no reason for this other than he hasn’t been able to travel with me recently and posts from the summer were ones I whipped up together impulsively at the start of the workday or before bed.

If you’re new here (which I know quite a few of you are), Lupin is my little wolf. The Wolf to be exact. The other half of Wanderer and Wolf.

 photo Lupin LIttle Wolf 2_zps1n7yvflu.jpg

I rescued him back when I was living in Chicago and, for the most part, we’re pretty inseparable. You can read more about him here and here.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll also know he just had his second birthday this weekend!

Naturally, he was spoiled all day with treats and cuddles (he really does live a tough life) and had a mini party fully of birthday cookies.

 photo DSC02623_zpssrvl4p9l.jpg

Of course, we all had to have some pie too. Friends don’t let friends eat treats on their birthday alone.

Any excuse, am I right?

Some may say I’m a little crazy to have a birthday celebration for my dog. To them I say: did you get to eat pie this weekend?

This is really just a little post to let you know he’s doing well, feisty as ever and if we’re being completely honest, it’s just an excuse to post pictures of him.

Who doesn’t love looking at puppy pictures?

Good Morning!

I’m not a morning person. At all.

My whole life I’ve been a bit of a night owl who cringes from the morning sun like a vampire and walks around in a raging mood until a few cups of coffee in.

However, when spring and summer comes, mornings go from unbelievably unbearable to something I look forward to every day.

Now, let’s get one thing straight, I’m not like those ridiculous bed comericials where the actor wakes up smiling, happy and ready to take on the world.

It’ll take me a while to get out of bed but by the time I do and I go to take Lupin out, I love it.

The flowers, bright sun and dewy grass.

How can you not enjoy waking up to this:

Don’t you just wish spring would never end?
